Ethical Clearance

Because research published in Iktisyaf: Journal of Dakwah Studies may involve human participants, authors are required to ensure that their research complies with applicable ethical standards and principles of research involving human subjects.

Where applicable, authors must obtain ethical approval from an appropriate ethics committee, institutional review board (IRB), or other authorized ethical review body before conducting the research.

Ethical considerations include, but are not limited to:

  1. Ethical approval for research involving human participants, where required.
  2. Protection of participants from physical, psychological, social, or other potential harm.
  3. Informed consent obtained from participants before their involvement in the research.
  4. Voluntary participation and absence of coercion, ensuring that participants are free to participate without undue pressure or influence.
  5. The right to withdraw, allowing participants to discontinue their participation at any stage without negative consequences.
  6. Anonymity and confidentiality in the collection, storage, analysis, and publication of research data.
  7. Appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria that are scientifically and ethically justified.
  8. Protection of participants' health, safety, dignity, and well-being throughout the research process.
  9. Duty of care, requiring researchers to take reasonable measures to minimize potential risks to participants.
  10. Additional safeguards for vulnerable populations, including children, elderly persons, persons with disabilities, economically disadvantaged groups, or other individuals who may require additional protection.
  11. Ethical treatment of non-human animals, where applicable to the research.
  12. Appropriate supervision and research oversight, particularly for research involving students, vulnerable participants, or potentially sensitive research activities.

Authors should clearly state in the manuscript whether ethical approval was obtained, including the name of the approving institution and approval/reference number, where applicable.

Low and Negligible Risk Research

An exception may be made for research categorized as Low Risk (LR) or Negligible Risk (NR), where applicable and in accordance with relevant institutional and national regulations.

Low Risk refers to research in which the only foreseeable risk to participants is discomfort. If there is a possibility that the research may result in harm or risks more serious than discomfort, the research should not be classified as low risk.

Negligible Risk refers to research in which there is no foreseeable risk of discomfort or harm to participants. Where a foreseeable risk exists, it must not exceed ordinary inconvenience. If there is a possibility that the risk may exceed inconvenience, the research should not be classified as negligible risk.

For research categorized as low or negligible risk, Iktisyaf: Journal of Dakwah Studies may not require formal ethical approval from an ethics committee or institutional review board, provided that the authors can demonstrate that the research meets the applicable low- or negligible-risk criteria.

In such cases, the journal may require authors to submit a signed ethical clearance checklist or statement confirming that the research falls within the low- or negligible-risk category.

Authors remain responsible for ensuring that their research complies with applicable ethical standards, institutional policies, and national regulations.

Ethical Clearance in Indonesia

For authors conducting research in Indonesia, ethical clearance may be obtained from an appropriate and authorized ethics committee or institution according to the nature of the research and the applicable regulations.

Where relevant, researchers may obtain ethical clearance through the Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional (BRIN) or other authorized ethical review institutions before conducting research involving human participants.

Authors are encouraged to consult the relevant institutional ethics committee or competent authority when they are uncertain whether their research requires ethical approval.

Ethical Statement in Manuscripts

Where ethical approval is applicable, authors should include an Ethical Approval statement in the manuscript containing, at minimum:

  • Name of the ethics committee or approving institution;
  • Ethical approval/reference number, if available;
  • Date of approval, where applicable; and
  • A statement confirming that informed consent was obtained from participants, when required.

For research that does not require ethical approval, authors should provide a clear explanation in the manuscript explaining why ethical approval was not required.

Iktisyaf: Journal of Dakwah Studies reserves the right to request evidence of ethical approval or other relevant documentation during the editorial and peer-review process.
